Lupus Erythematosus - Causes

The causes of a disease with lupus are still unclear. Although it is known that the lupus autoimmune disease is present, so pathological reactions of the immune system, which are directed against its own tissue. However, what exactly causes this formation of autoantibodies in lupus disease is unknown. Surely there is a hereditary component: In families with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the susceptibility to develop the disease (genetic disposition), increased.

Lupus: causes unclear in SLE

What triggering factors have yet to come, so that the lupus disease breaks out, is unclear. Among other things, viruses and UV light are discussed, as well as hormones.

In addition, it is suspected that in the organism affected persons certain cleanup mechanisms of unnecessary or potentially harmful cells only work diminished, so that dead material is not sufficiently degraded and accumulates. This in turn is classified by the immune system as dangerous and causes defense reactions: This is the inflammatory process is set in motion and the lupus disease breaks out.

In addition, it is known that certain medications can cause systemic lupus (drug-induced SLE), such as antihypertensive agents, epilepsy or antibiotics. The disease is usually mild and the symptoms of lupus disease often go back after discontinuation of the drug.

Skin Lupus: causes with hereditary component

The cause of skin lupus (CDLE) seems to be the hereditary component, but less pronounced than systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In contrast, the incompatibility of UVB radiation has been shown to be an important factor in CDLE. Hormonal influences as well as psychological and physical stress as causes may play a role in the onset of the disease.
