Roofing with bitumen - you have these possibilities

Bitumen is an indispensable building material in the roof area. Different bitumen materials can be used in many ways for the roofing. A brief overview of where bitumen is used everywhere as a roof covering can be found in our article.

Different roof types

Of course, roof is not the same as roof. Depending on the size of the building and the type of building, different types of roofs can be distinguished.

  • Steep roof near the house
  • Flat roof near the house
  • Roof of garden shed or arbor
  • Carport roofing
  • Roof of a small shed

Steep roof near the house

Here, bitumen is sometimes used in the form of bitumen shingles for roofing. This is rarely the case with us - in the US, this type of covering, which we only use for garden sheds but almost standard. D Roofs roofed with bitumen shingles certainly have a high durability: covering almost always lasts between 20 and 30 years.

It also has several advantages: eine lighter roof construction is possible because the weight is lower than with roof tiles

better insulation effect due to the wooden slab substructure

  • residential house with flat roof
  • A classic flat roof is always sealed with bituminous membranes. For connections and roof passages one uses bitumen tapes and liquid bitumen.

The bituminous membranes or bituminous membranes are also treated with a liquid bituminous compound - the so-called roof varnish.

In the case of flat roof waterproofing, practically everything consists of bituminous products.

Roof of garden sheds and arbors

In the case of small buildings such as a garden shed or an arbor, the roofing can be done either with bitumen shingles or simply with two layers of bituminous roofing felt.

The roofing felt can be fixed or nailed with bituminous glue. Alternatively, an asphalt roofing membrane can be laid over a layer of roofing felt. Welding tracks are heated by the gas burner and then stick to the substrate by leaking bitumen.

Carport roofing and tool shed

Again, bitumen sheets are usually used here. They are laid either as a two-ply roofing felt or as a roofing felt-felt combination.

When laying welding tracks, you should always have the appropriate expertise and at least one helper. Even a fire timer should always be on the roof when working with gas burners.

Tips & TricksOne - but rarely used - alternative to the classic bitumen cover are EPDM films. They are easy to lay, very durable and seal off excellently. However, you must always make sure that the film is not damaged.
